Why Is Calcific Tendonitis So Painful?

If you are dealing with severe and persistent shoulder pain, there is a chance that you have calcific tendonitis (also spelled tendinitis). For some people, this issue can become so bad that their arm mobility becomes limited! Why is calcific tendonitis so painful, and what treatments might be able to help? This blog post explains.

Why Does It Hurt So Much?

The severity of calcific tendonitis varies from case to case. Some people have a form of this condition known as degenerative calcification, which may occur as part of the natural aging process and normal wear and tear. As the tendons start to fray, calcium builds up on them as part of the body’s healing response. Degenerative calcification is not always painful; many people are not even aware that they have it!

Other individuals have reactive calcification. Its cause is not always clear, but it occurs when a change in the tendon instigates calcium deposits. The pain can be most intense when the calcium deposits start to be absorbed by the body.

The pain caused by calcific tendonitis can be particularly bothersome if it causes the tendons to become impinged (pinched). Pressure placed on the shoulder joint can also cause significant discomfort.

Does Calcific Tendonitis Go Away on Its Own?

Many cases of calcific tendonitis go away on their own. However, it can take up to 18 months for that to happen! In the meantime, you may experience pain that interferes with your daily activities. It is also important to remember that shoulder pain can have many causes, so it is always wise to see a doctor for any type of severe or persistent discomfort.

Treatment Options for Calcific Tendonitis

There are several methods for treating calcific tendonitis, ranging from rest and medication to surgical intervention. Your doctor will make a recommendation based on the details of your case.

Many patients are candidates for a treatment known as barbotage, a minimally invasive technique that is consistently effective. During treatment, a doctor uses diagnostic ultrasound to pinpoint the exact location of the calcium deposits. Then, they insert a needle to break up the deposits. If the deposits are relatively soft, barbotage may also involve the use of a saline solution to “wash” them away and completely remove them.

Are you struggling with shoulder pain? You might have calcific tendonitis! Talk to a qualified physician to learn how you can find relief.
